Membership FAQs

Membership of Quorum Singers is open to anyone who can pitch match, subject to number caps on voice parts and across the choir as a whole to retain the choir’s character and musical balance.  The choir is full this term however we will keep this page updated as places become available.

We hope that you will find these Frequently Asked Questions helpful.  If you would like further information about joining Quorum, please contact us on .

What sort of music do you sing?

We have a mixed repertoire. We sing both secular and religious music, folk and traditional music, acapella and accompanied. There are often opportunities for solos and small groups to perform within pieces and at our concerts.

Recently, we’ve sung music from Les Misérables, some sea themed songs including Bobby Shaftoe, Lovely on the Water and what is now a Quorum favourite, Anchor, Lauridsen’s Sure on this Shining Night, What a Wonderful World and You’ve got a Friend. We also have a wide repertoire of Christmas music ranging from Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols to a medley from Muppets Christmas carol. Our Christmas concerts usually feature some carols which are suitable for audience participation.  For an idea of our repertoire please go to our past performances and listen to us sections.

Why should I join Quorum?

We all love singing with Quorum. It is a friendly, inclusive choir and we enjoy being able to put our voices to good use, supporting the local community, raising money for charities and good causes.

We have a great time at rehearsals and value the benefits singing with Quorum have on our wellbeing. Our musical director, Marianna makes learning the music fun whilst at the same time stretching us to make the most of our individual vocal range. We are fortunate to have Margaret as our accompanist at all our rehearsals and concerts.

Quorum is proud of the quality of our singing as is reflected by the feedback that we receive. You can hear some examples of our repertoire here

How do I join?

At the moment we are full and we are not able to accept any new members this term but watch this space and we will post updates here when spaces become available.

We have Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass sections, and often split further into 8 parts. We have a long tradition of both
men and women singing the Tenor voice part.  Singing is a hobby we all love, so we want you to love it too, and to feel comfortable singing as part of Quorum Singers.

After a few rehearsals, if you want to carry on with the choir, we’ll ask you to do a quick voice check at the end of a rehearsal. This is not meant to be intimidating, and you don’t need to prepare anything (unless you have a particular tune you want to share with us). We’ll check your vocal range (to see which section you’re best suited to) and your ability to pitch match. Many of our members read music but this isn’t a requirement as we learn notes together in rehearsals and have audio tracks to help us practice at home.

If all goes well at the voice check, we’ll send you a welcome email with all the information you need and ask you to sign our GDPR form so that we can contact you when we need to.

Then that’s it! Welcome to the choir, join us at rehearsals and get ready for performing and raising money for local charities and good causes.

Does it cost anything to be a member?

We ask for payment of membership fees once per term (3 times per year).  The fees are really reasonable, we just need to cover the costs running the choir: insurance, hall hire, paying our accompanist and Musical Director and buying or renting new music. Membership fees are reviewed termly and are currently around £50 per term (£150 per year).

We know everyone’s situation is different, so just have a chat with us, if you feel that the cost will stop you being able to join. We will always take your circumstances into account.

When and where do you rehearse?

We practise on Wednesday evenings during term times (time off over Christmas, Easter and Summer holidays, as well as half terms!), from 7.45pm – 9:30pm.

Rehearsals are generally held in the Hatfield Road area of St Albans.

What if I can't make it to a rehearsal?

We know people are busy, get ill, or just deserve a holiday sometimes, so 100% attendance is a tough call. At Quorum, we ask that you attend as often as you are able to (and let us know if you can’t make it).

As a relatively small choir, it definitely works better when attendance is consistent, as it does make a difference to the pace of learning of the whole group.

You’ll soon work out how much practice you need, and you might need to do some homework to keep songs fresh in your head, or to finally conquer those bars with the awkward timings.

Our aim is to get concert-ready, so if that means putting YouTube on repeat for a while, writing lyrics on post-its or just attending rehearsals as normal for the music to sink in, then that’s down to your learning style.

How do I get to rehearsals?

Plenty of our local members walk to rehearsals. For people on the Thameslink line, we’re a 15 minute walk from the City Station, and for bus users, there’s plenty of services that stop along the Hatfield Road.

For people coming from a little further afield, there is free parking on the Hatfield Road and surrounding side streets.
